The PHECC First Aid Essentials – Basic First Aid course provides participants with the knowledge, confidence and practical skills required to respond effectively to accidents, injuries and medical emergencies. Delivered over 6.5 contact hours (typically one day), this programme includes Cardiac First Response (CFR) and equips learners with the skills needed to provide immediate care when every second counts.

About the Programme

PHECC has designed the First Aid Essentials Standard to provide appropriate training for individuals and groups requiring a basic first aid skill set, including Cardiac First Response (CFR).

The First Aid Essentials programme consists of three distinct streams, all designed for delivery over one day (6.5 teaching hours) and incorporating a core CFR Community module.

This course combines classroom learning with practical skills development to ensure participants can confidently apply first aid principles in real-world situations.

Course Content

Introduction to First Aid

Participants will learn about:

  • The role and responsibilities of a First Aider
  • Scene safety awareness and hazard identification
  • Barriers to effective patient and team communication
  • Patient capacity and obtaining consent for treatment
  • Signs and symptoms of abuse and/or neglect
  • Maintaining personal wellbeing as a responder

Patient Assessment

Learn how to:

  • Conduct a Primary Survey
  • Conduct a Secondary Survey
  • Assess and record vital signs
  • Recognise signs of patient deterioration

Common Medical Emergencies

Understand the recognition and management of:

  • Diabetic emergencies
  • Asthma attacks
  • Seizures
  • Poisoning incidents
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Sepsis
  • Fainting and collapse

Injury Management

Develop practical skills in:

  • Wound care and bleeding control
  • Fracture management
  • Basic immobilisation techniques

Cardiac First Response

Practical instruction includes:

  • CPR for adults, children and infants
  • Recognition of cardiac arrest
  • Safe and effective use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
